Terms of Use

What you can do with the names

The names generated by Roll The Name are free for you to use however you like, including for personal tabletop campaigns, characters in published fiction, NPCs in video games or apps you build, and any other creative project. We do not ask for attribution and we do not claim ownership over the output you generate.

One caveat. The generator draws on common fantasy naming conventions and names that have appeared across many fantasy works. We cannot guarantee that any specific name produced by the generator is not in use as a trademark or a recognizable character name from a copyrighted work. If you are publishing something commercially, do your own check before committing to a name.

What you cannot do with the site

Please do not scrape the JSON data files in bulk, mirror the site, or run automated scripts that hit the generator hundreds of times per minute. The site runs on a free hosting tier and abusive traffic affects our ability to keep it free for everyone else. If you want to build something on top of our data, write to us first.

Use at your own risk

Roll The Name is provided as-is. We make no warranty that the site will be available at any particular time, that the names produced will be unique, or that the site will be fit for any particular purpose. We are not liable for any harm arising from your use of the site or any name produced by the generator.

Trademark notice

Dungeons & Dragons, D&D, Forgotten Realms, and related game terms are trademarks of Wizards of the Coast LLC. Roll The Name is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Wizards of the Coast. References to D&D races, classes, and naming conventions are made in service of the site's purpose as a tool for players of the game and are intended to fall within fair use. Specific name examples drawn from official D&D source books appear in their original form only where the same names are widely used across the player community.

Third-party advertising

Roll The Name shows advertising provided by Google AdSense. We do not control which specific ads appear and we are not responsible for the content of third-party ads or the practices of the advertisers. If you have a concern about a specific ad, the appropriate channel is Google AdSense's own complaint process.

Changes to these terms

If we change these terms, we will update the date at the top. Continued use of the site after a change constitutes acceptance of the new terms.
