How half-elf names work in 5e
Half-elves get naming both ways and belong to neither, which is the whole half-elf condition in miniature. Canon says they use either human or elven naming conventions, and often deliberately cross the streams: a half-elf raised among humans may take an elvish name to stand apart, while one raised among elves may take a human name for the same reason. The name a half-elf carries usually tells you which parent's world they pushed against.
Blended sounds
The most distinctive half-elf names are the blended ones, where a human name takes on elvish music or an elvish name gets clipped to human practicality. Aelar becomes Alan at the trading post. Mara stretches into Maraleth at the elven court. The generator above pulls from human stock, elven stock, and hybrids in between, so a single roll gives you the full spectrum. Listen for the results that sound like they have a foot in each camp, because those are the ones doing half-elf work.
A name as a choice
For most races on this site, a name is inherited. For a half-elf, a name is frequently a decision, and your character made it for a reason. Did your bard keep the elvish family name her human father could never pronounce? Does your warlock introduce himself with a different name in human towns than in elven ones? Roll a handful above and pick two: the name your half-elf was given, and the name they actually use. The distance between them is your backstory.
Borrowing meaning from the elven side
Elven family names translate, and a half-elf can use that. Surnames like Amakiir (Gemflower) or Siannodel (Moonbrook) carry meanings the human side of the family may never learn to hear. A half-elf who introduces themselves with the Common translation instead of the Elvish original has made a small, telling choice about which audience they are speaking to. Both versions are correct, which is the most half-elf thing imaginable.
