How gnome names work in 5e

Gnomes collect names the way other folk collect coins. By canon, a gnome gets a personal name from each parent, more from aunts, uncles, and grandparents, plus nicknames that stick along the way, and a gnome may rack up a dozen names before adulthood. When dealing with non-gnomes who would faint at the full list, a gnome mercifully condenses down to a personal name, a clan name, and maybe one nickname. The generator above gives you that practical short form.

Bright, busy, and quick to say

Gnomish names bounce. They love diminutive endings like -ble, -kin, -bo, and -wick, and they pack playful consonant clusters into small spaces: Boddynock, Fizwillow, Quippa. Clan names read like a workshop ledger or a hillside map, full of badgers, gears, gardens, and copper. A gnome name that sounds slightly like a wind-up toy is a gnome name doing its job. If a result reads too stately, add a bouncy nickname in the middle and it corrects itself.

The nickname is the real name

Here is the table tip: a gnome's nickname is usually the truest thing about them, because nicknames are earned while given names are gifts. A rock gnome artificer called Sprocket got that name from somewhere, and the story behind it is free backstory. Roll a full name above, then invent the incident that produced the nickname. Forest gnomes lean toward nature nicknames, rock gnomes toward tinkering ones, and deep gnomes keep theirs close and practical.

    A note on deep gnomes

Svirfneblin bend the rules: life in the Underdark trims the gnomish name pile down hard. A deep gnome typically keeps one working name and guards the rest, because in their tunnels a name freely given is leverage freely handed over. If you are rolling for a svirfneblin, take the shortest result in the batch and treat every other name as something earned slowly.

Sample names from this generator's gnome list: Alston, Alvyn, Bimpnottin, Breena, with clan or family names like Beren and Daergel. Roll above for the full range, and click any result to copy it.
